Read this if you are coming to NK Hurst as a contractor in the near future. Contractors, visitors, and employees are required to complete GMP training every year starting January 1st. Please watch the following video, complete the quiz and read the Good Manufacturing Practices below.

Good Manufacturing Practices:

Contractors entering or working food manufacturing and storage areas must take all reasonable precautions to prevent contamination of food and abide by the GMP policy.

Managers in food manufacturing and storage areas must take responsibility for assuring compliance with all GMP’s.

Prohibited Items and Practices:

  1. No jewelry, exposed piercings, rings, necklaces, wristwatches, or false eyelashes are to be worn in manufacturing or storage areas. The only jewelry that is permitted is a PLAIN band with no stones.
  2. No items are permitted in shirt pockets or above the waist in manufacturing or storage areas, and no other items are to be carried where they might fall into product.
  3. No hats, skull caps, bandannas, scarves permitted in the manufacturing or storage areas. Exceptions can be made for religious head covering. Please talk to management.
  4. No smoking, chew/spitting, or vaping is permitted on N.K. Hurst property.
  5. No eating, drinking, gum chewing, candy, throat lozenges or other food is permitted in any area except in the break room, outside of the building or designated areas. Eating or tasting the products we are manufacturing is not permitted in production areas.
  6. No toothpicks, matchsticks or other non-food objects in mouth or behind the ear in manufacturing or storage areas.
  7. No glass, ceramic, porcelain, or brittle plastic is permitted in the facility unless approved by the Quality Assurance and Food Safety Manager and is in the glass policy.
  8. No spitting is permitted in any area of the facility.
  9. Contractors are not to use their cell phones or cameras in production or the warehouse unless given permission by management.
  10. The use of pens with caps, staples, paper clips, thumbtacks, and pushpins is not permitted in production areas or immediate breakroom from production.
  11. Contractors are not to use N.K. Hurst property unless given permission by management.
  12. Contractors are not to bring in any chemicals unless approved by the Quality Assurance and Food Safety Manager.

Contractor Practices:

  1. Contractors are to practice good personal hygiene and maintain a high degree of personal cleanliness.
  2. Contractors are encouraged to avoid the use of perfumes, colognes, or other scented personal products like lotions or body sprays.
  3. Persons showing evidence of communicable disease in a transmissible stage or while infected with boils, sores or infected wound or other abnormal sources of microbiological contaminants must not enter any area in which there is chance of product contamination.
  4. All Band-Aids must be N.K. Hurst company issued and metal detectable. All Band-Aids must be covered with gloves or other waterproof dressing while working on the production line.
  5. Medical patches must be worn on the trunk of the body unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor. Medic Alert tags can be worn as authorized by a physician worn underneath clothing.
  6. Outer garments – Contractors are to wear clean washable outer garments in good repair. Pants must be worn. No shorts, tank tops, beads, buttons, glitter, or other loose objects that may come off and enter the product stream.
    1. If any loose objects are worn, contractor must put on an N.K. Hurst provided lab coat to enter production and/or warehouse.
  7. The company will supply the following:
    1. Hair restraints - Company-supplied hair restraints must be worn in manufacturing and storage areas to prevent hair from falling into product; this includes beards and mustaches. Hair curlers, hair combs, and bobby pins are not allowed. Ponytail holders are allowed under hairnets to contain long hair. Hair restraints should be put on prior to washing hands.
    2. Hearing Protection (optional) - Hearing protection must be company-supplied and secured (muffs or attached by string worn around the neck) to prevent product contamination. Earplugs should be put in ears prior to washing hands.
  8. All contractors must wear close-toed/heel shoes when entering the production/warehouse area. Shoes must be kept clean, neat, and in good repair.
  9. Fingernails must be kept clean and properly trimmed (nails must not extend past fingertips). *Fingernail polish and false fingernails are strictly prohibited.

Food Safety Practices:

  1. Everyone must wash hands:
    1. Before leaving restroom facilities.
    2. Before entering the production/warehouse area.
    3. After eating or smoking.
    4. After coughing, sneezing, or blowing the nose while covering the face or mouth with hands.
    5. After touching eyes, ears, mouth, nose or hair.
    6. After inserting hearing protection.
    7. After handling inedible or contaminated product; touching the floor.
    8. After handling air hoses.
  2. Gloves are provided, but not required for individuals in the bean packaging areas, however hands are required to be newly gloved when touching food or food contact surfaces after handling any non-contact surface such as brooms, hoses or trash.
  3. Everyone must follow established traffic patterns to minimize contamination between waste areas, raw products and finished products.
  4. Littering and other poor housekeeping practices are not allowed.
  5. This is a closed campus, which means that no frocks, hairnets, beard nets are allowed outside of building.
  6. Conversations with the media are strictly prohibited in relation to NK HURST COMPANY business.
